Chapter Fourteen

Johnny

“Johnny, please help me,” Kate pants, her hand pressed to her forehead as we step into her studio apartment.

I hurry over to her side, my eyes widening. “Are you alright?” I grasp her shoulders gently, offering support as she wobbles slightly.

“I’m feeling dizzy. The room’s spinning around me. I need to lie down, like, now,” she breathes out, her breath coming in uneven bursts as she clutches her chest.

“Whoa, hold on!” my grip on her steadies her, and I guide her to the bed. “We need to get you to the hospital. You’re looking so unwell.” Panic creeps into my words.

“No, I just need to rest,” Kate’s voice wavers softly. She eases onto the bed and starts slipping off her shoes, but I stop her with a reassuring touch.

“Easy there,” I say, meeting her gaze. “Let me do that for you.” She gives a faint nod as my fingers wrap her ankle.

“Thank you,” she mouths the words, her droopy eyes fixed on me.

I return her gaze, my fingers curling around her ankle, carefully unfastening her shoe. “Quit being stubborn,” I insist, retrieving her shoes and placing them beside the bed. “You look incredibly sick. We have to see a doctor.”

“No, I’m gonna be fine,” Kate sighs, sinking into the bed. “I already know what the doctor’s gonna say.”

I blink, surprised, and swallow back my worry. “What?” I step closer, sitting at the edge of the bed. “What’s going on? Don’t hold back; tell me.”

“Oh my God!” Kate’s gasp catches me off guard as she leans in, touching her palm to mine. “Look at you, all concerned. I didn’t think you’d be this worried.”

I stand up quickly, turning away to take a deep breath. “Enough of this nonsense. Let’s get you to the hospital,” I insist, feeling her fingertips brush over my hand.

I pivot back around, meeting her gaze again. She tugs me to sit beside her on the bed. “Trust me, some rest will do the trick,” she insists, a soft smile gracing her lips. Her smile threatens to disarm me completely. How am I supposed to keep my cool when she’s giving me that innocent, puppy look? I know I won’t be able to resist much longer.

“Fine, just spill it. What’s up?” I grin, my teeth sinking into my lower lip.

“I think my blood sugar’s taken a nosedive. I haven’t eaten anything in the last twenty-four hours,” Kate confesses, her gaze fixed on mine.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Panic bubbles up inside me. I know how Kate struggles with eating when anxiety hits, and it’s not good for her health. “I’m not letting you starve yourself like this.”

Her words hit me hard. “I have zero appetite.” She admits, placing a hand on her forehead.

I can’t help but roll my eyes. “You and your stubbornness.” I reach out and gently tug her hand away from her forehead. “So, what do you want to eat? Pizza? Burgers? Tacos?” I throw out a few options, standing up.

“Don’t go,” she requests, gripping my hand to halt my movement.
